Reader Questions: Branding

What is branding?

Branding is about creating an experience. It’s about long term relationships and building trust. It’s real, honest and authentic. Or at least it should be. It’s your reputation.

It’s also mostly out of your control. How do you like them apples?

Brand is not transactional. Brand is forever. – Gary Vaynerchuk

Everyone and their brother is out there telling you to work on your personal brand. But no one is telling you how, did you ever notice? That’s because other people’s perceptions make up a large percentage of your personal brand – and that’s the part you can’t work on.

But don’t give up hope – there are things that you can work on. You can give away your best content for free like Gary Vaynerchuk and many others. You can work on your skills while you are doing so. You can even find a happy medium in a place like Medium where you can work on your writing skills and make a little money.

You are in control of what you put out there.

Just be yourself. People can spot a fake a mile away. It really is that simple. Trust me, you do not want to be labeled a fake in today’s society. Everyone on the planet with internet (and many who don’t) will know before night falls wherever they are. Anything you do is permanent, and people will know instantly. But the best part? Until you are fairly well known, no one will care.

Don’t stress it, just do it. – Raiscara Avalon

A brand is more for a corporate entity anyway. Somehow as a society, we have decided that non-corporate entities needed them too, then it trickled down to freelancers and the like, and now to everyday people. Just think of it as your reputation and you will be fine. Build your body of work, whatever that might be, keep showing up and doing the work.

The brand will happen naturally.

Be more concerned with character than reputation. Character is what you are, reputation is what people think you are. – John Wooden

Quarterly Goals For July-Sept 2019

Okay, so I’m a little behind the curve here, but not too far behind! Of course, are we ever really behind? Time-wise, I would say in this case yes, as it is about mid-August, so I missed an entire month (plus in regards to the blog), or 1/3 of the quarter already. And this is one of the hardest quarters for me personally, with Reverse SAD and various good weather plans when I feel up to it…or force myself to go to, cause I was invited and need to get out of the house for my health!

Quarterly Goals for July – Sept 2019

  • Make $1000 Per Month From Blog
  • Make $1000 Per Month From Freelance Writing
  • Make $1000 Per Month From Medium
  • Declutter Each Room Of The House
  • Finish The Rapture
  • Clean Up and Go Through All Email

That’s it for this quarter, and I am aware that some won’t happen – but it keeps me honest. They could happen sooner, they could happen later – it’s not under my control when they happen, but doing the things that can lead to those goals is under my control. And I’m really trying to narrow my focus on just those things that are within my control.

Yes, I plan on making money, from everything I do if possible. Not that I wouldn’t do the work for free, but in today’s world I don’t have to. I have a family to support after all, and money makes the world go round. That is just basic reality, no matter how I may wish it were different.

I also want to do a ton more creative things – which is why my Patreon just says creative things. I love so many different things and want to get back into doing some things that I love – like homemade beauty products and such. But I have to take things bit by bit else I will get overwhelmed with the thousands of things I would like to do. So right now, I’m focused mostly on writing.

I have been working on some of these goals since the end of July, but I kept putting off this post for some reason or another. I think fear is trying to derail my goals, and I won’t let it. Even if it means that I have to fight to put up a blog post that might be “too personal” for Karen, my ego, or just fearful of whatever. Most of the time I’m not even sure why I procrastinate, I just find myself doing it.

Things are a bit better mentally, though I’m plum wore out from everything going on plus trying to work on my own goals. But I’m striving, and that’s the important part.

How are you doing on your own goals?

A (Hopefully) Brief Hiatus

Things aren’t going so well in my neck of the woods, so I’m taking a hiatus. This time I actually don’t know when I’ll be back. Allergies are kicking my ass, I feel like I have a horrible flu – it’s just my CFS and Fibro, and there is some sort of general malaise going on. Never mind depression and Reverse SAD possibly rearing its ugly head.

I really need to batch write blog posts more often!

I’m hoping to take the time to get the rest I need while being Mom and girlfriend. School is out this Friday I believe, so that will be one less worry. I am committed to this blog, but I knew going into it that sometimes I was going to lose traction because of my illnesses. Sucks, but what can you do?

Expect a slightly more sporadic posting schedule this summer. My aim is to hit Mondays and Fridays at least, but I already know that if certain things are starting a month early, then I may be in for one awful summer. Or it could be great, and over quickly. Uncertainty has become a way of life for me, unfortunately.

I will always be available by email if you need something.
Take care of yourselves,

Just a quick reminder that today is the last day to purchase the Herbs & Essential Oils Super Bundle 2019 for $37! Time to get off the fence and commit. They do offer a 30-day money back guarantee.

[Personal Friday] Reverse SAD or Stress?

[Personal Friday] Learning, Learning, Learning
Personal Friday at Raiscara Avalon

I have been dealing with one hell of a headache for over 3 weeks now. Feels like a compression headache, and it is getting really old. My head constantly hurts, from a mild ache to screaming migraine. No wonder I’m feeling meh lately.

But the meh feels deeper than just meh, if that makes sense. Which makes me wonder: is it just stress, or is my Reverse SAD kicking in early? I’m supposed to avoid stress due to my illnesses, but as you can see, that doesn’t always happen. Have I crossed an invisible boundary?

I sure hope it’s not my Reverse SAD kicking in early. Too much needs to get done before that depressive cycle hits, but part of me fears that it is already too late. It’s still in the gray zone though, where it could be many different things – but I already just want to hide into the Sims 4. It is taking quite a bit for me to continue to push through and get things finished, and that may only get worse.

Generally, my Reverse SAD kicks in around the 4th of July, leaving me quite the mess until September/October – just in time for regular SAD to kick in. Now I’m in this twilight zone, and it feels like Reverse SAD, but it’s also not clear – could be stress, allergies, any number of things that have me down. Or just the shitty weather blues.

Do you suffer from Reverse SAD? How do you handle it?

I’m still looking for some help on my GoFundMe, if you can help me out! I ended up about $500 short on my bills this month, due to some unexpected expenses. This definitely hasn’t been my spring so far! Everything helps at this point, so even if you can only donate $5, it helps!

Just a reminder about the Herbs and Essential Oils Super Bundle 2019! If you get your bundle before midnight tonight, you will also receive a 50 serving bag of Morning Motivator blend from the Maca Team absolutely free! That’s a $17.48 value. The Morning Motivator blend increases your energy, without straining your adrenals OR energy crashes. So get on that, would you?

JuNoWriMo Has Started

Are you in?

For those that aren’t aware, JuNoWriMo is a 50,000-word writing challenge in June. It’s not nearly as strict as NaNoWriMo, and it’s a little better placed in the year. No major holidays and the kids get out of school if they aren’t already. Which depending on the age of your children, may or may not be a good thing!

I do it every year, though I have yet to reach the 50,000 goal. Haven’t won a NaNo at all, in fact. But I try every time one comes around. The only downside to JuNoWriMo is that it is back to back with Camp NaNoWriMo in July. And July is hard for me, as Reverse SAD kicks in around the 4th…and often has me out til September/October.

Which stinks, because I love summer.  About the only time of year I can get out and do things here in Maine.

JuNoWriMo may have already started, but it’s not too late to join in! Head over to to sign up for the newsletter. Join the FB Group, and have fun writing 50,000 words like a mad person! I run word sprints on Twitter Thursday evenings, and did some of the behind the scenes work too – though JuNoWriMo isn’t my baby, I just help out. Join us on the #JuNoWriMo hashtag for all the fun!

What are your favorite writing challenges?

Happy Memorial Day

[Personal Friday] Learning, Learning, Learning

[Personal Friday] Learning, Learning, Learning
Personal Friday at Raiscara Avalon

Did I happen to mention that I’m learning?

I’m learning so much about blogging, things I didn’t even know that I didn’t know. And even better, I am slowly putting things into action to see what works for me. All this learning is also helping me generate ideas of my own. Lots of ideas. I just need to remember to do one thing at a time. Slow change is better than fast.

If I do 20 different things at once, how will I know what worked?

I wouldn’t, and that’s a problem. I can’t repeat what works, keep it, if I don’t know what works. And I can’t get rid of what doesn’t work, again because I don’t know. It’s a bit of a Catch-22, really.

Learning is fun, but putting things into practice is more important. All the theoretical knowledge in the world won’t help you unless you do. Doing is how you truly learn.

With this process, I know I’ll truly learn how to do whatever I need to. The world becomes my oyster at that point, and it can be the same for you.

I have a lot to learn. And I do mean a LOT! But I’ll get there, one step at a time. While I work, I’m learning – because I’m doing mostly, but not always. I’m learning about blogging, writing in general, life, and any other topic that interests me. I’m a multipotentialite, so I never stop learning…the topics just change. And this blog is a bit of a reflection of that.

We all need to learn and grow – Nature abhors a vacuum. And if you aren’t growing, you’re dead…it just hasn’t caught up with you yet.

As a side note, I have 3 months to raise a LOT of money in order to prevent homelessness. Come heating season in Maine, I’m out of luck. So I’m raising money on GoFundMe, working as much as I can to make money, and my family is as well. We actually need more than what I’m raising – that is literally just what we need to get housing and a reliable vehicle.

We are dealing with all kinds of issues right now, from food scarcity to medical to transportation – and it keeps getting worse! I have faith that folks will help us out because otherwise, I don’t know what we are going to do.

Living far below the poverty line is no good – especially with impending homelessness. And I can’t get any help from the state etc, I’ve already tried. Best I could do is subsidized housing – but that’s a two year + waiting list. And honestly, the options are not in areas I want to live.

So please donate what you can. Or buy something I have for sale, such as Random Photos From Maine Vol I. Read and clap on my Medium posts. Share my fundraiser. Something.

What To Do When You Lack Energy

Pin This!

Last week, I talked about what to do if you lack brain energy, but what if the lack of brain energy is actually a lack of energy, period? Lack of brain energy can be a symptom of something even worse – a complete lack of energy in its totality. I’ve been going through this since last week, and it’s still not fully resolved.

Usually, a lack of energy isn’t something new to us. We’ve been there before and resolved it.

Take a Period of Rest

Sometimes you just have to take some time off, and allow yourself to rest. For most people, it should only take a few days – for those of us with chronic illnesses, it may take weeks or months to feel “normal” again. You should have an idea of how long it will take you to bounce back, but be flexible – it may take less time or more time than the “usual” amount this time.

Fill The Creative Well

Seems illogical to take in anything when your brain and body are fatigued, but I find it is one of the better times to do so. This helps to prevent feelings of guilt about not working, for one thing. For another, it’s definitely a productive use of your time without actually BEING productive – which may strain your already fatigued self. Make the time to watch TV, read books, take photos – whatever fills the well for you without feeling like you’re being productive. Trick your brain!

I’ve spent time watching a little of a bunch of shows, like Elementary, Mom, Ancient Aliens, and even started Keeping Up With The Kardashians. There are reasons behind all of them, but my brain just thinks we’re having fun and “avoiding” work.

Pin This!

Listen To Your Body

This is the time to really up your self-care habits. Not doing them, or not doing them enough may be what caused your fatigue in the first place. I know that for me, if I don’t keep to my schedule and various habits, I turn into an entire mess in an instant thanks to my chronic illnesses. Sometimes, though, it just hits without warning. Don’t force anything if you can help it…that, in my humble opinion and experience, just makes things worse.

Take Frequent Breaks

If you absolutely cannot avoid something, or start to feel like you’re about ready to get back to work, take small, frequent breaks. I have to do this sometimes due to a sensitivity to screens when my fatigue levels are high, to prevent headaches and eye strain. Do something else for a while, or just walk away. Even if you have to make up an excuse. I’ve taken several breaks while writing this blog post, due to going through that sensitivity thing right now. Close your eyes for a few moments, take a bathroom break – whatever makes sense to you and your situation.

These are all ways that I personally combat fatigue, and know to work. Some may have to be done in conjunction with others, make this work for you personally.

Do you have any other tips for battling fatigue? What do you personally do when your energy levels get too low?
